Thinking about Grandma

I've been thinking about my Grandma Mahaffey today.  I have a set of china that belonged to her, and I think of her whenever I use it.  It isn't fancy...but neither was she.

Grandma died of brain cancer when I was barely 7 years old, so my memories of her are fuzzy and fragmented.  I mostly remember going to the farm...one of my favorite things in the world, especially when all of the cousins were there.  We would play hide and seek in the cornfield at night.  The bigger kids would slide (or jump) off of the barn roof.   (I was the little kid, so I couldn't do all of the more "fun" things.)  I remember exploring the chicken house and barn and the old schoolbus.  There was an old steering wheel that was attached to a metal pipe, sticking up out of the dirt in the backyard.  We would swing 'round and 'round on it...I thought it was the greatest thing ever!  (Being a little kid sometimes had its advantages.)  In the evenings we would play blind man's bluff in the living room, jumping and climbing around on all of Grandma's furniture.  Sometimes we would stage a production for the grownups, using old clothes and draperies stored in the back bedroom.  We'd play croquet in the front yard, young and old alike.  We all loved that old farmhouse!  There was a "secret panel" upstairs (mostly used for storing peanuts) and a door leading into the attic, which I was always too afraid to enter (although I've had many a nightmare about it).  At Grandma's house, all of us young'uns were allowed to drink coffee.  I thought it tasted horrid, but I still would sip some of it because it made me feel so grownup.  Life was so exciting at Grandma's house!

I remember standing on the step stool at the kitchen counter, "helping" Grandma cook supper.  Grandma was known for being a wonderful cook!  I have heard many a story about her cooking, especially her homemade rolls.  Her kitchen wall was lined with shelves that stored all the jars of canned goods and jellies that she always put up. Grandma always kept a plastic Mr. Clean doll sitting on the window sill over the kitchen sink that I loved to play with.  I sure wish I knew what happened to Mr.Clean!

I don't remember Grandma saying much.  I don't know if that was because she was a quiet woman, or if she just seemed so because Grandpa ALWAYS had plenty to say!  I remember sitting between them in the pickup, going to church.  I remember playing with their German shepherd, King, who was so patient with all of us grandkids.  We could ride him like a pony, and he was gentle as could be.  Let a stranger come around, though, and watch out!  He was very protective of us kids!

I remember sitting on a stool in Grandma's bedroom as she combed out her hair...before the cancer.  I remember going to see her after her surgery, and she was wearing a turban to cover her shaved head.  I vaguely remember that she just wasn't the same...

I have to admit that I'm a bit envious of my older cousins who had more time with Grandma and whose memories are more vivid.  I remember her face, but not her voice.  I seem to remember her scent, and how soft her skin was, and how sweet her smile.  I remember Daddy holding me and leaning me down to kiss her cheek as she lay in her coffin at her funeral.

I was very close to my mother's mother, Granny Putman, and was blessed to have her in my life for 35 years.  My children insisted that I be called Granny when Jesse was born, because she was such a special person and strong influence in my life.  But there is a large hole left from losing Grandma at such a young age.  I don't remember a lot about her, but I know that she was very special to me.  I know that I loved her very much, and I still miss her to this day.

Monday, Day 131

We have been studying the book of Matthew for the past few months on Sunday evenings.  I love reading and studying the four gospels!  They contain the story of Jesus, which is what it is all about.  I love the words of the old song:

Tell me the story of Jesus
Write on my heart every word
Tell me the story most precious
Sweetest that ever was heard.

Mike gave an excellent study on Matt. 25 last night.  It is one of those special chapters that solely contain the words of Jesus.  I particularly like to focus on the things that Jesus spoke and taught...after all, He is the living Word.  This chapter consists of 3 parables, each one offering something about what is expected of us and how we'll be judged.  The first is the parable of the ten virgins, which tells us we need to be wise and prepared in order to be accepted.  The next was the parable of the talents, which tells us we need to use what God has given us.  The third was a scene from the day of judgment where the goats are separated from the sheep based on their compassion and caring for those in need.  There is enough is this chapter to keep us busy our whole lives...and it should!  Good stuff!

So today, I am thankful that we have the words of Jesus preserved for us.  We have been blessed richly to be able to read what was said by the Son of God.  Words that give life.  Words that changed the world.  How awesome is that?!  (and I don't use the word awesome lightly!)

Matthew 25:44-46 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.  And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Bittersweet weekend

Well, what started out as a great weekend with my kiddos and grandbaby ended up on a tragic note.  Stephen and Mandy made it to town Friday afternoon.  It was so wonderful to get to hold Jesse and play with him!  He is such a sweet little (or not so little!) guy...such a happy personality.  I just couldn't get enough of him!  Saturday, we went to the benefit garage sale at the bank for a little while.  Jesse was a perfect little gentleman.  Then we did some shopping for baby clothes at the outlet store, and he slept right through it.  The girls came over a little later, and we spread a quilt in the yard.  Jesse loved being outside!  It was a nice, peaceful afternoon...until we got the news about Dee.  Such a horrible tragedy!  Stephen and Mandy had planned to leave after lunch on Sunday, but decided to drive back to Sherman early that morning so they could see the family.  My heart aches for the grief that they are feeling.  Monica losing her husband before his time.  Doyle and Dean losing their only son.  Meghann, Emily and DeLynn losing their dear dad.  I pray that God will strengthen and comfort this family during their extreme sorrow.

We also learned Saturday that our dear Brother Gene had to have emergency surgery for a perforated colon.  I know that was scary for his family!  Thankfully, the surgery went well.  I pray that he will have a speedy recovery and feel much better soon.

Seven years ago today was when Toby was killed in a car accident.  I vividly remember that day!  Kay called us because he was being life-flighted to Dallas and she wanted someone there as quickly as possible.  Stephen was here that day, so he and I headed over there as quickly as possible.  There were already several people there when we arrived, with many more arriving as the evening progressed.  My heart aches for the continued feelings of grief and loss that Kay and Leslie...as well as many others...share.

We are transportation-challenged again.  Ricky wrecked his Mustang Saturday night.  The wrecker thinks it will be totaled.  Ricky's neck was giving him fits yesterday morning, so I took him to the ER.  CT scan showed no damage, so they just prescribed muscle relaxers and pain meds.  His bronchitis was worse after nearly a week of antibiotics, so they also provided a new prescription for a stronger one.  He had a pretty rough day yesterday but seemed to be feeling quite a bit better this morning when I took him to work.

All in all, I am thankful for the health and well-being of my family.  Ricky could have been seriously injured, or worse.  My heart goes out to the Westbrook family.  My prayers go up for Bro. Gene and his family.  And my continued love and prayers go up for Kay and Leslie's family.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4  Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; [4] Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
