Anticipation

Winter has returned!  We had really been enjoying the warm and sunny days of late.  Today and tomorrow are both supposed to be pretty cold and gloomy though.

I have started back on my walking/jogging schedule.  I had decided to quit jogging, but I've discovered that a little jogging actually makes me feel better.  Plus we are planning our big trip in May and I want to be in good shape for trekking through the mountains.  We are planning the biggest vacation we've ever taken.  We hope to spend 2 weeks driving up to Idaho and then through Montana and Wyoming and Colorado...spending quite a bit of time in Yellowstone.  I've been getting brochures and maps through the mail to help plan our trip.  We are really looking forward to it!

I've been pretty busy with CASA stuff lately.  I had court last week and have another one next week, which means I've had to do 2 court reports this month.  The first one ended a case, so my caseload is down to 3.  I intend to stay in touch with "my teen" from the closed case, but it won't be as often and I won't be having to report on it any more.  I've heard from her and her mother, and they both want me to stay in touch...which means a lot to me!  I've also attended a couple of CASA Roundtables this month...training sessions provided by our office.  I have appointments for Saturday to visit with both of my families.  (My third family is in Idaho, so I have to limit my contact to phone calls, emails and letters...until our trip in May, that is!)

Been having some plumbing issues in our hall bathroom.  The tub/shower has been leaking and keeping the carpeting in the hallway wet for the past few days.  Dennis worked on it last night (replacing the tub fixtures and seats and caulking), and it seems to have fixed the problem.  The carpet is dry this morning!  Haven't tried out the shower yet though.  Hope it is all repaired...otherwise it means tearing out the whole tub and tiles and completely redoing the plumbing.  I know I've said it many times before, but I am SO thankful that Dennis is such a good handyman!

Well, Jesse should be making his appearance VERY soon.  According to their last doctor visit, he is a BIG boy (8 1/2 - 9 pounds ALREADY).  I don't think the doctor is going to allow Mandy to go all the way to her due date...Feb. 4.  I am so excited to meet my first grandbaby!  Dennis has a week's vacation the second week of February, so we plan to go spend some time bonding with the little guy.  :)

I hope all of you are staying warm and avoiding the flu!

Day 28

I began this project of 365 days of Thanksgiving to help focus my mind on things that are praiseworthy.  (Philippians 4:8 Furthermore, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things pertain to love, whatsoever things are of good report, if there be any virtue, or if there be any praise, think on these things,)  I have been very pleased with the results up to this point.

Some days I struggle to find something for which to be thankful.  But after meditating for awhile, I not only can come up with one thing, but many.  Being thankful is an attitude that I have control over.  No matter what the circumstances of my life, I am blessed.  I just have to recognize and acknowledge that fact.

I hope that those of you who keep up with me on facebook aren't growing tired of my daily notes of thanksgiving.  I realize that I could complete this project without publicly posting my daily thoughts.  However it serves a two-fold (at least) purpose to do so.  First, it provides accountability.  It is so easy to ignore or "forget" to do something if no one is aware of it.  All of you are keeping me accountable, so that I focus on my goal each day.  Secondly, I have been told that this encourages some of you to also look for things that are praiseworthy in your lives.  It is a strong desire of mine, and always has been, to try to be an influence for good to others.  If by sharing this little portion of my life can, in any way, be a benefit to anyone else, then it is worth it.  I hope we can all grow more thankful together!  Thanks to all of you who encourage me on this journey!

Day 28:  I’ve had experience with several people lately who struggle with lack of transportation, whether from lack of financial resources to afford owning or maintaining a vehicle or from lack of a driver’s license and/or vehicle registration.  It is amazing how much the lack of such a basic item impacts every aspect of their lives.  So today I am very thankful for our transportation!  We each have a good, reliable car that provides safe and comfortable conveyance wherever we need to go.

Best Laid Plans

Well the New Year didn't exactly start the way we planned it.  Hmmm, funny how often our plans go awry!  I spent most of the last week of December preparing for our annual NYE party.  I reserved a meeting room at a local hotel so we'd have plenty of room (and parking!).  I spent hours working on decorations and party favors.  I made up what food I could ahead of time, including baking and decorating about 4 dozen cookies as snowmen, penguins and polar bears.  Then New Year's Eve arrived, and Ricky came down with the flu (actually, his fever started about midnight the night before).  I took him to the local clinic (couldn't get an appointment with our family doctor).  The NP didn't think he had the flu.  He had all the symptoms except for a bad headache...his was a mild headache...so of course if COULDN'T be the flu.  She gave him a prescription for antibiotics and cough medicine and put one on hold for Tamiflu, in case he started having a bad headache...making it the flu.  So we started him on the antibiotics and he just got worse.  By time our party would have started (if I hadn't already cancelled it), his temperature was 103.5 degrees and holding.  He and I stayed up and welcomed in the new year, but we sure weren't partying!  Finally, around 2:00 a.m., his fever started coming down to where I felt ok about going to bed.

The next morning, as soon as the pharmacy opened, I called and got them to fill the Tamiflu and started him on it immediately.  By bedtime his fever had broken.  We were able to go to bed early and sleep all night.  He slept until about 3:00 this afternoon and woke up feeling MUCH better.  (I did wake him up this morning long enough to eat some crackers, drink a glass of water and take his medicine.)  Dennis has tried to keep his distance to avoid catching it, and I have been diligent at washing my hands and using hand sanitizer, so we HOPE we won't get sick.

Since I've been somewhat restricted for the past couple of days, I've gotten a lot of "paperwork" done.  I worked up my goals and "game plan" for this year.  I mapped out our vacation route for the trip we are planning in May (more about that in a later post).  I closed out my files for 2013 and started new ones for 2014.  Now I'm working on getting all of Ricky's bedding washed and everything disinfected.  I'm hoping for a nice, non-eventful weekend!

Now with the holiday season behind us, it is time to get back on our healthy eating and exercise routine.  I still have food that I had prepared for the party that I need to get rid of.  Dennis and I have been eating on the cookies, but I finally wrapped up the rest of them and plan to take them to the kids at church Sunday.  I'll probably send the Peppermint Oreo Truffles with the girls to take to work.  Those things are too addicting to keep around the house!  Ricky has been eating on the cheese ball and cheese-stuffed pretzel bites.  I'm sure he'll finish off all of that (he isn't a sweet eater).  I finally threw away the last of the candy that Dennis got from his customers.  From here on out, we are getting back to low-carb, low-fat foods!  *sigh*

Well, I hope the rest of you had a better start to your new year.  I'm hoping things will be "uphill" from here on out for us!

James 4:13-15 Go to now ye that say, Today or tomorrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain. (And yet ye can not tell what shall be tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appeareth for a little time, and afterward vanisheth away.)  For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, and, If we live, we will do this or that.
