Praise the Lord...

Ps 148:11-13 Kings of the earth and all peoples; Princes and all judges of the earth; Both young men and maidens; Old men and children. Let them praise the name of the LORD, For His name alone is exalted; His glory is above the earth and heaven. (NKJV)

I’ve always loved the song that was written from this psalm. The twelfth verse always leaves me a little teary eyed. Nothing is more beautiful than hearing small children and old people sing songs of praise to God! I loved to listen to my children sing when they were little, and I love listening to my grandchildren now. While Nam was still just beginning to learn English, his momma was teaching him songs about the love of God. I kept a Wee Sing Bible Songs CD in my car when we were keeping Nam, and it was played every day while we were driving back and forth getting him from his mom. The sound of his sweet little voice singing along melted my heart! Dennis always plays an Acapella CD in his truck, and it wasn’t long before Nam knew every song on it. I remember the time that Sheila and Matt were riding with us and Nam started belting out the songs. Matt kept looking back in amazement as he sang (all the parts) of the songs. It was priceless!

The other part of that phrase, “old men and children” really hit home to me during Daddy’s final months. His health and mind got to the point to where I had to sit next to him on the back row at church services. I noticed that he would usually sing at the very beginning of the service. (After that, it just got to be too much for him.) He couldn’t use a songbook any more, but he knew all of the words. Hearing his voice singing praises to God from his heart, when his mind wouldn’t allow him to do much of anything else, always touched my heart in a special way. I still tear up when I think about it.

This will always be one of my favorite psalms, and I hope to continue to sing praises to God even in my extreme old age (if I make it there).

My very own Music Man

Dennis loves to sing and hum and whistle...in other words, make music any way he can. You can often catch him doing so...even when eating. Of course, everyone who has been around him knows that he has an amazing bass singing voice. That was one of the first things that attracted me to him. (I've always been a sucker for a good bass!) But whether he is belting out a bass solo or humming a jingle from an old TV commercial, the man truly loves music!

One of the first songs that he taught our children (and me!) when they were little was "Bill Grogan's Goat". (Google it if you are unfamiliar with it!) Of course, Smokey the Bear was always one of his favorites. (For those who didn't know him back in the day, he began his career as a forester.) I think he knew more kid songs than I did! At any time, he might bust out singing one of these songs, or a church hymn, or one of his favorites from Neil Diamond or John Denver...or more.

This morning I was doing dishes and heard Dennis coming down the hall...humming the theme to "The Addams Family"..."da da da dum *snap snap*". I had to hold back a chuckle. You just never know what's going to come out of his mouth next!

I hope this week brings you much joy...and plenty of music!
